After you contract for work with Gunma University, the VISA acquisition for entering Japan and the procedures of VISA with Immigration Services Agency are the following. In case you work with Gunma University and go into the research and education, the type of VISA might be “Professor”.
If you don’t contract for work with Gunma University which means you never earn any income in Japan, and enter Japan by means of research-mix on the basis of international agreement, the type of VISA might be “Cultural Activities” and the stand in Gunma University is “Foreign researcher”.
If the VISA of foreign nationals holds true as “Professor” or ” Cultural Activities”, first things first, the foreign national needs to acquire the CoE.
Those researchers who Gunma University does not pay the remunerations and salaries and the period of stay is within 90 days, must acquire the “Temporary Visitor VISA”.

The Flowsheet of the Application of Certificate of Eligibility(CoE)
※From March 17st 2023, the Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) was started to send by Email. As to the printed certificate, it’s OK to send its double-sided printing (including JPG) by Email from application representative to applicants.
The applicants bring the valid certificate sent by Email and bring also the valid Passport, and can apply VISA to the JAPANESE embassy in which him/her stay temporary. After the VISA issued, if the researcher had the valid CoE, the valid VISA and the valid Passport, the new entry to Japan is possible.
After foreign national entered Japan, please the foreign national give the paper certificates back to the respective Regional Immigration Services Agency.

Living in Japan now
Those who have the “Professor VISA” or anything else which can make employment contract with Gunma University, and whose VISA expiration date would be 3 months after the first day of work with Gunma University, it is no need to do any other procedures.
In the first day of work with Gunma University, please submit the copy of Residence card to Gunma University.
2-1 Change to work status of residence
Those who have the “Student VISA”, “Dependent VISA”, “Designated Activities VISA” prepare the documentation and application required and submit them on their own to the Immigration Services Agency.

If the foreign national does the part-time job at the Gunma University, additional document is needed. That is a document prepared by Gunma University certifying the content, period, position, and remuneration of the applicant’s activities at Gunma University.

2-2 Renewing your period of stay
Foreign national on his/her own must prepare the documentation and application required and submit them to the Immigration Service Agency when the situation is undermentioned.
In case the foreign national has the “”Professor VISA”” or anything at all who can work in University and “”That VISA’s expiration day”” is in less than 3 months from the first day of your plan to work.

(1) The resident tax (or non-tax) certificate issued by a city hall where you live as of January 1st.
(2) The tax payment certificate (stating total income and tax payment status for the year) issued by a city hall where you live as of January 1st.
※A person who was residing as a full-time employee with a “professor” visa status at the time of application for renewal you have become a part-time employee due to a job change.
(3) A document prepared by Gunma University certifying the content, period, position, and remuneration of the applicant’s activities at Gunma University.
